As utility staff and regional organizations conduct planning analysis, the disparities in how buildings are defined in different data sources has created challenges in developing accurate and meaningful estimates of conservation potential. Because square feet by building type is such a strong driver in the development of these estimates, reviewing the building types currently in use, refining the building types, developing regional consistency, and then using common definitions for regional data collection (such as NEEA’s upcoming CBSA) is an important opportunity for the region.
