Water heaters give us warm showers and clean dishes, but they can also help the grid by reducing peak loads and balancing variable renewables. Direct load control (DLC) with water heaters has been used to manage demand around the country for years, but not as much in the Northwest. In this session, we'll hear from a regional utility that’s deploying the technology. We’ll also learn about a new pilot study that shows how grid-integrated water heaters can cut electricity demand during peak periods while making sure customers have hot water when they need it. We’ll discuss the possibilities of this technology with the study leaders and a water heater manufacturer. Strategy/Policy; Residential
