On June 27th, USDOE published a Direct Final Rule for new efficiency standards for furnaces and boilers, and for air conditioning and heat pump systems. Because it is a Direct Final Rule (no proposed rule beforehand), there is a public comment period that ends on October 25th. If there are no substantive comments in opposition, the Rule becomes final on October 25th. Pacific Northwest savings from the new air conditioning and heat pump standards are estimated at 35 aMW by 2030.

The new furnace and boiler standards will become effective on January 1st, 2013.

The new air conditioning and heat pump standards will become effective on January 1st, 2015.
