This interactive article from the New York Times details how each state has generated energy between the years of 2001 to 2017 and how these methods have changed over time. It shows a comparison between the top sources of electricity generation including coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydro electric and petroleum. 

According to the article, "Fossil fuels still dominate electricity generation in the United States. But the shift from coal to natural gas has helped to lower carbon dioxide emissions and other pollution. Last year, coal was the main source of electricity generation for 18 states, down from 32 states in 2001."
